DEFINITION OF TERMS

HCFA:  Health Care Finance Agency.

DMERC: Durable Medical Equipment Regional Carrier, HCFA's fiscal intermediary for handling Medicare claims.

SADMERC: Statistical Analysis Durable Medial Equipment Regional Carrier, HCFA's agency for the approval of medial equipment, assigns HCPCS codes and sets reasonable and proper reimbursement rates for all Medicare approved equipment and supplies..

HCFA / SADMERC / DMERC have certified that all registered Group / Level II Support Surfaces (Advanced Pressure Relieving Devices) provide equivalent -same- therapeutic benefit.

Group/Level II Support Surfaces bring the pressure at the body interface to those areas where the patient's body touches the mattress below the average working pressure of the capillaries which is recognized to be 32 mmHG ... advanced pressure relieving or advanced pressure reducing as opposed to pressure reducing that is defined as bringing the interface pressure below that of a standard hospital mattress.

Suggested Contraindications

Patients with COPD*. The continuous circulation of ward dry air dries out the mucous membranes and thickens pulmonary secretions.

* COPD - Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Disease process that causes decreased ability of the lungs to perform their function of ventilation. Diseases that cause this are chronic bronchitis, pulmonary emphysema, chronic asthma, and chron bronciolitis.
Notes

1 - Air-fluidized beds are and low-air-loss therapy beds may be contra indicated for patients with "coexisting pulmonary diseases." This includes Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases (COPD) - asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, tuberculosis, pneumonia, patient on oxygen, lung cancer, etc. The inhalation of warm, dry air thickens pulmonary secretions and the lack of firm back support makes coughing ineffective. Before using a low-air-loss bed or mattress, it is wise to first consult a pulmonologist as to whether or not the bed may be contra indicated for your patient.

2 - Unit is electrically powered and that cost must be included in the total operating cost. Electrical operating costs are not included in the above rate.

3 - Lowest-Cost Group / Level II Support Surface/Specialty Beds certified by HCFA / SADMERC / DMERC.

4 - These daily rates were calculated by dividing the monthly rate by 30. Actual daily rates for short term (2-7 day) on on-call rentals of these mattresses are 2 to 3 times higher than the listed cost. Making the actual cost range between $50.00 to $200.00 per day.
